What Does a Car Really Cost Per Month in South Africa?

South African car buyers typically focus on the monthly bank instalment when deciding what they can afford. But the true all-in cost of owning a vehicle is substantially higher, often 40–70% above the finance payment alone. Here's what you're actually paying:

1. Finance Instalment + Admin Fee

The bank instalment calculated on the amount financed at your interest rate, plus the NCA-capped R69/month admin fee. This is the only number most calculators show.

2. Comprehensive Insurance

SA banks require comprehensive insurance for all financed vehicles. Expect to pay R800–R2,200/month depending on vehicle value, your age, suburb, and claim history. A new R400,000 vehicle typically costs R1,200–R1,600/month to insure for a driver aged 25–35 in Cape Town.

3. Fuel Costs

With inland 95 ULP at approximately R21.95/L (May 2026), a vehicle consuming 8L/100km and driving 1,500km/month costs roughly R2,634/month in fuel alone. This varies significantly by vehicle type and driving habits.

4. Tracker Subscription

Most SA banks require a tracking device. Subscription costs run R200–R500/month. Tracker (Cartrack), Netstar, and Mix Telematics are the major providers. Some lenders finance the device but charge the subscription separately.

5. Maintenance and Tyres

New vehicles with service plans: budget R400–R600/month for tyre replacement, wiper blades, and out-of-plan items. Older vehicles or those without service plans: R1,200–R2,500/month is a realistic reserve.

6. Licence Disc

Annual vehicle licence (disc) costs R200–R1,500 depending on tare weight. Spread monthly, this is R17–R125/month but is often forgotten until renewal.

The 50% Rule of Thumb

A reliable rule for South African buyers: your all-in monthly car cost will be approximately 1.5× the finance instalment if you have a modern vehicle with a service plan. Without a service plan, plan for 1.7×. Use this as a sanity check before signing a deal.
